Temperature

Water temperature is a measure of the average kinetic energy of water molecules.

Why is temperature important?

Temperature is one of the most important water quality parameters. It affects water chemistry and the functions of aquatic organisms.

Water temperature can influence the:
•  amount of oxygen that can be dissolved in water
•  rate of photosynthesis by algae and other aquatic
    plants
•  metabolic rates of organisms
•  sensitivity of organisms to toxic wastes, parasites and
    diseases
•  timing of reproduction, migration, and aestivation of
    aquatic organisms

When temperatures start to move outside the tolerable range of an aquatic organism, they can become stressed and the number of individuals and species within the waterbody can decline.

What influences water temperature?

Water temperature is affected by light energy from the sun, the type and size of waterbody and human activities.

Sun's energy - water absorbs heat from the sun and is affected by seasonal and daily changes, shade (cover), and air temperature

Turbidity - suspended sediment absorbs heat

Type and size of water body - smaller, shallower waterbodies are generally warmer

Human activities - wastewater or runoff may be warmer or cooler than the receiving water body, removal of riparian vegetation may increase direct sunlight...

What is considered healthy?

Optimal temperature ranges will vary depending on the aquatic ecosystem and the species.  Some species are adapted to cold water, while others are adapted to warm water.
